!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! My friends and I are looking for a cheap project car. Communal hoonmobile, basically. Costs would be split five or six ways.

4 or 5. We all have DD's already but want a shared to car to do things with we wouldn't want to do with our own cars.

I'd share a project car with two of my closest mates, but beyond that there are too many opinions, too many opportunities for things to go sour. Power to you though. I hope there's no arguments about money and everyone agrees on a direction for the project.

I foresee much strife and many broken friendships in your future.

I'd agree but we're tight and all have the same idea in mind. We're not the kind of people that have problems with each other.

My thoughts? - Get two of them and race them against each other. =P
Seriously though, the E30 is a great car. As to if the whole sharing thing works out, I have no idea. What model are you getting? If I recall the USA got mostly 325i?

I don't know how I'd feel about the shared hoonmobile, but I'd say NP to the car.
On our side of the pond E30's are picking up some value, and manual RWD 325's are the most sought after (M3 notwithstanding). You can hardly pick one for less than 2 500$.
This one seems to have its flaws but at 700$, what do you have to lose? If the engine's running and the transmission's OK, then you'd just have to invest about 1 000 - 1 500$ to find a MAF and another divers's seat / interior, do some basic maintenance, get that rear quarter panel fixed and ideally find some euro bumpers.
Then you'd have a cheap, good looking hoonmobile.

NP at $700 but be warned there is some major work ahead. Between the bodywork, timing belt, interior work and what the hell the PO did with the vacuum/coolant lines you may be better off looking for a better example.

The one in the ad is a 325i

Things like damaged interiors and exterior dents don't concern us at all. A quick web search tells that the MAF is ~$100. Assuming there is a short laundry list of other things wrong, I think the car could reach sound mechanical condition without spending too much.
I don't know why everyone's shitting on the idea of a shared project. None of us "wear the pants" or get all agro or possessive. We've all got DD's that we love so a community hoonmobile is just icing on the cake.

Yeah but what if someone crashed it? Wouldn't the others be mad?

If someone absolutely obliterated that car that would be bad. It is a relatively small investment though.

Somehow I missed the ad the first time round. Looks nice, for $700 you really cant go wrong even if you need to put a little money in. The M20 is a sweet little engine especially if you like straight 6s. At that price just buy it and sort out later! =D
